Helston museum is located in the centre of Helston town opposite the Red Lion public House and is one of the largest folk museums in the South West, hosting a massive collection of exhibitions arranged carefully over two floors and five separate halls. From the narrow frontage protected by a cannon from HMS Anson, which foundered off Loe Bar in 1807 when around 100 sailors' lives were lost and which led to the pioneering work of Henry Trengrouse, featured in the museun's Drill Hall, the building opens up and extends back to provide a fascinating understanding of days gone by. The Museum expanded into the Meat Market in the early 1980s, then into the adjoining Drill Hall in 1999. A suspended gallery, the "Loft", was also added at this time that in turn allowed the creation of the Mezzanine Art Gallery. The Museum's collection reflects both the social and industrial history of The Lizard Peninsula, from mining, fishing and farming through to home life in the 18th-20th centuries.
Members on the investigation were John, Amanda,Eddie and Debbie. On Monday 23.2.09 at 6.15 pm the team arrived at the museum and set about doing baseline tests. No unusual E.M.F readings were taken, the temperature was 7 degrees and no draughts were detected, several trigger objects we placed in locations around the museum and a locked off camera was placed in a known "Hot spot" where the figure of a lady has been reported many times.
The investigation started at around 7.15 pm which is by far the earliest we have ever started and since we had to finish by 9 pm we got straight into it.
Amanda and Debbie went upstairs while I started downstairs while waiting for Eddie to arrive. I went straight to one of the reported “Hot Spots” and set up a locked off camera, unfortunately we were unable to turn off the security lights and it was not possible to film both ways so the locked off went one way and I went the other.
After filming for a minute or two there was a bang on the front door, nothing paranormal though, it was Eddie arriving. We split and Eddie took the back half of the building and I took the front.
Eddie was walking past a small set of scales when he noticed them moving but they stopped before he could catch the movement on camera so he moved into the “Drill Hall” where he heard various names being called, (a list of the names picked up will appear at the end of this report) and also a feeling of being crushed and not being able to breathe.
Walking on a few feet he looked up and saw that a large lampshade was swinging. In total there were four of these lampshades hanging from the ceiling and all next to each other but only one of them was moving. We later moved up onto the balcony or “Loft” which brought us level with them and could feel no draught’s at all in the area and the cause of the movement is still a mystery to us.
Amanda and Debbie were asking if any spirit there would make a noise for them or even whistle and they were rewarded with a faint whistle which all members of the team heard wherever they were in the building. Amanda also picked up on a man wearing a cape who lived in the village of Carleen which is about 5 miles outside Helston. Half way through the investigation I took a walk back to the “Butter Market” to check on the locked off camera only to find it had stopped, on checking it I found that the battery was almost dead. Battery I was using has a working time of approximately 1650 minutes and as we had only been working for just over an hour I thought it a bit strange and put it down to the usual paranormal power drain. I managed to get the camera working again but the battery only just made it to the end of the investigation. The next day I went to put the battery on charge again and found there to be 995 minutes of power left which again I will put down to paranormal activity.
While walking round the building filming I was stopping frequently and asking if there were any spirits who would like to communicate with us and almost every time I asked I was rewarded with an orb or a flash of light and a clear E.V.P. of the name “Nick “being called, which leads me to believe that the Museum is a very active place.
The same results were being achieved by Amanda and Debbie up on the top floors with orb activity and voices and whistles being heard and Debbie picking up on a small dog which she thinks would have lived there and as Eddie heard the name “Lady” being called we think this may have been the dogs name.
Amanda also picked up on a Family named Carter who had connections with the dairy side of the market and she could see them bringing their cows there, one of the men being on the large side and wearing an apron, she also picked up on there being a problem with Botulism in the dark distant past. Names picked up were.
The Carter family, Mr Richard Pasco, Nick, David & George Penwellan, Meryl Davies, Stuart Beacon (or Stuart from Beacon) Jacob Soustrant or sowstrant, James Toesland, and Sarah Powseland.
We believe that there is a lot more to be discovered in Helston Museum and we think a full investigation of 6-7 hours and with all the electrical equipment turned off would make a huge difference to our results and we hope to be invited back in the near future to carry out some more work and to get to the bottom of the building and its history.
