The Tarot is a deck of 78 cards used for divination.
The deck is devided into two parts: the Major and the Minor Arcana. The word 'arcana' is Latin and means secret.
The Major Arcana consists of 22 cards each with its own title, the figures such as the Fool, the Magician, the High Priestess, the Sun, Moon, Stars etc are all symbolic of our spiritual journey through life and are munbered 0 to 21 starting with the Fool and ending with the World.
They are thought to be linked with the 22 letters of the Hebrew alphabet and are used with the Kabbalah,s Tree of Life.

The Minor Arcana is a combination of four suits; each suit is comprised of cards numbered from 1 to 10 plus court cards of Page, Knight Queen and King.
The four suits are usually Cups, Rods, Swords and pentacles and it is easy to see they are the ancestor of our modern playing cards.

The origins of the Tarot are lost in time though some say they came from North India and were brought out by the Romany people who distributed them throughout Europe.
Some say they were invented in China and some say they came from Italy but their true origin will never be known.

In 1910 the English occultist Arthur Waite published an interpretation of the Tarot with images designed by Pamela Colman Smith.

Waite claimed that the cards dated back to the fourteenth century and that he had restored them to their original meanings as used by the Hermetic Kabbalah favoured by the Hermetic Order of the Gloden Dawn of which he was a member.

The Rider Waite deck still sets the standard for decks today though there are hundreds of different designs to choose form most of which still carry the old symbols and are mostly used the same way.

I have been reading and teaching the Tarot since childhood and use two packs, they are the "Morgan Greer Tarot" and the "Haindl Tarot".

I find the Morgans good for everyday readings but when doing heavy duty in depth spiritual readings i use the Haindl but you will have to find the ones that suit you, and when buying a pack you should find that the pack "chooses" you.
If you can find a book on tarot then you can start to pick up the meanings of the cards though after a few readings you should no longer need the book and you will develope your own meanings.

As with everything practice makes perfect so give yourself time and have fun ...J...

Last night I picked up my Tarot cards for the first time in a long time. :( I really enjoy reading the cards for my friends and family , but I only use the cards as a guide. They really help to get you back reading again. Its not a good idea to read them for yourself, as you may read to much into them, but as I was practising, I did. Well to my surprise they were so right. I should have realised they never let me down. Once you have had a pack of cards for a long time they become your old faithfuls. Thanks all Hippychick. :P

Some times I just don't get the time to read my cards, but last week I picked them up and did a reading for a friend. Well they did'nt let me down and even when I went to do the second reading for her I shuffled them really well but as usual they came up the same cards, except for two. I really new then that they where working for me.
